Data model: plateLines

General description: This is a PostScript file that contains a map of the plugging in the focal plane. It differs from the plOverlay file in that it is designed to be projected directly onto the aluminum plate. It should consists of circles around each hole, and lines connecting the circles together. The colors of the lines should be the same within each fiber block.

BOSS plateLines files

For BOSS, the alignment of the file is as labeled (+X/+RA up, +Y/+Dec to the right). Several plateLines files are produced. The basic one (plateLines-PLATEID6.png), has all of the holes, connected according to which block they are in. They are colored red and blue depending on whether they ought to be assigned a red or blue fiber. It is OK to assign a blue fiber to a red hole, but insofar as possible avoid assigning a red fiber to a blue hole.

The plateLines-PLATEID6-block-[color].png files show the same thing as the basic file, but only a few blocks at a time for clarity. The holes in other blocks are labeled but colored black.

The plateLines-PLATEID6-zoffset-[#].png files show which holes to apply the backstop washers to. There are three versions for the three possible thicknesses (100, 175, 300 microns). For each, the holes to backstop are shown with two, three, and four rings respectively, in purple.

The plateLines-PLATEID6-guide.png files show the locations of the guide fibers.

Finally, the plateLines-PLATEID6-std.png and plateLines-PLATEID6-sky.png files show the locations sky and standard holes. These are not meant to be of use to the pluggers, but are for the plate design team to make sure that those targets are evenly distributed across the focal plane.

First season of SDSS-III plates (3000--3534).

For SEGUE-2, the circles are colored according to the brightness of the object (using the un-extinction-corrected (g+i)/2 fiber magnitude). The 8 faintest within each block are colored blue, the 6 medium within each block are colored green, and the 6 brightest are colored red. These colors are to be matched up with the fiber colors, to have them sorted appropriately on the spectrograph. For each guide fiber, a small number is printed as well. Because this file is meant to be printed onto the plate, no other information is included. The file is designed with +X (+RA) to the right and +Y (+Dec) up.

For MARVELS, the blocks consist of 4 fibers each. In addition, pointing A is given solid lines, and pointing B is given dashed lines. The coloring of the holes is arbitrary. The fiber number is listed on the plate. The file is designed with +X (+RA) to the right and +Y (+Dec) up.
